The Census of Israel’s Warriors

Then the Lord spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, in the tent of meeting, on (A)the first of the second month, in the second year after they had come out of the land of Egypt, saying, (B)Take a [a]census of all the congregation of the sons of Israel, by their families, by their fathers’ households, according to the number of names, every male, head by head from (C)twenty years old and upward, whoever is able to go out to war in Israel, you and Aaron shall [b]number them by their armies. With you, moreover, there shall be a man of each tribe, (D)each one head of his father’s household. These then are the names of the men who shall stand with you: (E)of Reuben, Elizur the son of Shedeur; of Simeon, Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai; of Judah, (F)Nahshon the son of Amminadab; of Issachar, Nethanel the son of Zuar; of Zebulun, Eliab the son of Helon; 10 of the sons of Joseph: of Ephraim, Elishama the son of Ammihud; of Manasseh, Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur; 11 of Benjamin, Abidan the son of Gideoni; 12 of Dan, Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai; 13 of Asher, Pagiel the son of Ochran; 14 of Gad, Eliasaph the son of (G)Deuel; 15 of Naphtali, Ahira the son of Enan. 16 These are they who were (H)called of the congregation, the leaders of their fathers’ tribes; they were the (I)heads of [c]divisions of Israel.”

17 So Moses and Aaron took these men who had been designated by name, 18 and they assembled all the congregation together on the (J)first of the second month. Then they registered by (K)ancestry in their families, by their fathers’ households, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, head by head, 19 just as (L)the Lord had commanded Moses. So he numbered them in the wilderness of Sinai.

20 (M)Now the sons of Reuben, Israel’s firstborn, their genealogical registration by their families, by their fathers’ households, according to the number of names, head by head, every male from twenty years old and upward, whoever was able to go out to war, 21 their numbered men of the tribe of Reuben were 46,500.

22 (N)Of the sons of Simeon, their genealogical registration by their families, by their fathers’ households, their numbered men, according to the number of names, head by head, every male from twenty years old and upward, (O)whoever was able to go out to war, 23 their numbered men of the tribe of Simeon were 59,300.

24 (P)Of the sons of Gad, their genealogical registration by their families, by their fathers’ households, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, whoever was able to go out to war, 25 their numbered men of the tribe of Gad were 45,650.

26 (Q)Of the sons of Judah, their genealogical registration by their families, by their fathers’ households, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, whoever was able to go out to war, 27 their numbered men of the tribe of Judah were 74,600.

28 (R)Of the sons of Issachar, their genealogical registration by their families, by their fathers’ households, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, whoever was able to go out to war, 29 their numbered men of the tribe of Issachar were 54,400.

30 (S)Of the sons of Zebulun, their genealogical registration by their families, by their fathers’ households, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, whoever was able to go out to war, 31 their numbered men of the tribe of Zebulun were 57,400.

32 (T)Of the sons of Joseph, namely, of the sons of Ephraim, their genealogical registration by their families, by their fathers’ households, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, whoever was able to go out to war, 33 their numbered men of the tribe of Ephraim were 40,500.

34 (U)Of the sons of Manasseh, their genealogical registration by their families, by their fathers’ households, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, whoever was able to go out to war, 35 their numbered men of the tribe of Manasseh were 32,200.

36 (V)Of the sons of Benjamin, their genealogical registration by their families, by their fathers’ households, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, whoever was able to go out to war, 37 their numbered men of the tribe of Benjamin were 35,400.

38 (W)Of the sons of Dan, their genealogical registration by their families, by their fathers’ households, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, whoever was able to go out to war, 39 their numbered men of the tribe of Dan were 62,700.

40 (X)Of the sons of Asher, their genealogical registration by their families, by their fathers’ households, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, whoever was able to go out to war, 41 their numbered men of the tribe of Asher were 41,500.

42 (Y)Of the sons of Naphtali, their genealogical registration by their families, by their fathers’ households, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, whoever was able to go out to war, 43 their numbered men of the tribe of Naphtali were 53,400.

44 These are the ones who were numbered, whom Moses and Aaron numbered, with the leaders of Israel, twelve men, each of whom was of his father’s household. 45 So all the numbered men of the sons of Israel by their fathers’ households, from twenty years old and upward, whoever was able to go out to war in Israel, 46 even all the numbered men were (Z)603,550.

Levites Exempted

47 (AA)The Levites, however, were not numbered among them by their fathers’ tribe. 48 For the Lord had spoken to Moses, saying, 49 “Only the tribe of Levi (AB)you shall not number, nor shall you take their [d]census among the sons of Israel. 50 But you shall (AC)appoint the Levites over the [e]tabernacle of the testimony, and over all its furnishings and over all that belongs to it. They shall carry the tabernacle and all its furnishings, and they shall take care of it; they shall also camp around the [f]tabernacle. 51 (AD)So when the tabernacle is to set out, the Levites shall take it down; and when the tabernacle encamps, the Levites shall set it up. But (AE)the [g]layman who comes near shall be put to death. 52 (AF)The sons of Israel shall camp, each man by his own camp, and each man by his own standard, according to their armies. 53 (AG)But the Levites shall camp around the tabernacle of the testimony, so that there will be (AH)no wrath on the congregation of the sons of Israel. (AI)So the Levites shall keep charge of the tabernacle of the testimony.” 54 Thus the sons of Israel did; according to all which the Lord had commanded Moses, so they did.

10 Then I said, “(A)It is my [a]grief,
That the (B)right hand of the Most High has changed.”

11 I shall remember the (C)deeds of [b]the Lord;
Surely I will (D)remember Your wonders of old.
12 I will (E)meditate on all Your work
And muse on Your deeds.
13 Your way, O God, is (F)holy;
(G)What god is great like our God?
14 You are the (H)God who works wonders;
You have (I)made known Your strength among the peoples.
15 You have by Your [c]power (J)redeemed Your people,
The sons of Jacob and (K)Joseph. Selah.

16 The (L)waters saw You, O God;
The waters saw You, they were in anguish;
The deeps also trembled.
17 The (M)clouds poured out water;
The skies (N)gave forth a sound;
Your (O)arrows [d]flashed here and there.
18 The (P)sound of Your thunder was in the whirlwind;
The (Q)lightnings lit up the world;
The (R)earth trembled and shook.
19 Your (S)way was in the sea
And Your paths in the mighty waters,
And Your footprints may not be known.
20 You (T)led Your people like a flock
By the hand of (U)Moses and Aaron.

Tribute to Caesar

19 The scribes and the chief priests (A)tried to lay hands on Him that very hour, and they feared the people; for they understood that He spoke this parable against them. 20 (B)So they watched Him, and sent spies who [a]pretended to be righteous, in order (C)that they might [b]catch Him in some statement, so that they could deliver Him to the rule and the authority of (D)the governor. 21 They questioned Him, saying, “Teacher, we know that You speak and teach correctly, and You [c]are not partial to any, but teach the way of God in truth. 22 Is it [d]lawful for us (E)to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?” 23 But He detected their trickery and said to them, 24 “Show Me a [e]denarius. Whose [f]likeness and inscription does it have?” They said, “Caesar’s.” 25 And He said to them, “Then (F)render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” 26 And they were unable to [g](G)catch Him in a saying in the presence of the people; and being amazed at His answer, they became silent.

Is There a Resurrection?

27 (H)Now there came to Him some of the (I)Sadducees (who say that there is no resurrection), 28 and they questioned Him, saying, “Teacher, Moses wrote for us that (J)if a man’s brother dies, having a wife, and he is childless, his brother should [h]marry the wife and raise up children to his brother. 29 Now there were seven brothers; and the first took a wife and died childless; 30 and the second 31 and the third [i]married her; and in the same way [j]all seven [k]died, leaving no children. 32 Finally the woman died also. 33 In the resurrection therefore, which one’s wife will she be? For [l]all seven [m]had married her.”

34 Jesus said to them, “The sons of (K)this age marry and are given in marriage, 35 but those who are considered worthy to attain to (L)that age and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry nor are given in marriage; 36 for they cannot even die anymore, because they are like angels, and are (M)sons of God, being sons of the resurrection. 37 But that the dead are raised, even Moses showed, in (N)the passage about the burning bush, where he calls the Lord (O)the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. 38 (P)Now He is not the God of the dead but of the living; for (Q)all live to Him.” 39 Some of the scribes answered and said, “Teacher, You have spoken well.” 40 For (R)they did not have courage to question Him any longer about anything.

41 (S)Then He said to them, “How is it that they say [n]the Christ is (T)David’s son? 42 For David himself says in the book of Psalms,

(U)The Lord said to my Lord,
Sit at My right hand,
43 (V)Until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet.”’

44 Therefore David calls Him ‘Lord,’ and how is He his son?”

45 (W)And while all the people were listening, He said to the disciples, 46 “Beware of the scribes, (X)who like to walk around in long robes, and love respectful greetings in the market places, and chief seats in the synagogues and places of honor at banquets, 47 who devour widows’ houses, and for appearance’s sake offer long prayers. These will receive greater condemnation.”
